The apprenticeship contract
A work-study employment contract to learn a profession in a company while preparing for a state-recognized degree or qualification.
Understanding the apprenticeship contract
The apprenticeship contract combines classroom teaching at a training center with hands-on practice in a company. Signed between an employer and an apprentice, it leads to a qualification recognized by a state degree or a title listed in the French national register of professional certifications (RNCP).
The apprentice's salary
The apprentice earns a percentage of the French minimum wage (SMIC), or of the collective-agreement minimum wage if it is higher, based on their age and the year of the contract:
| Age | 1st year | 2nd year | 3rd year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 18 | 27 % | 39 % | 55 % |
| 18 to 20 | 43 % | 51 % | 67 % |
| 21 to 25 | 53 % | 61 % | 78 % |
| 26 and over | 100 % | 100 % | 100 % |
The exact amounts in euros track the current SMIC and change with each revaluation. Your ESIC advisor will give you the calculation that matches your situation.
Frequently asked questions
Who can sign an apprenticeship contract?
The contract is open to anyone aged 16 to 29 inclusive. Young people aged 15 who have completed their final year of French middle school (3rd) may sign by way of exception.
The age limit can be pushed back in certain cases:
- preparing for a qualification higher than one already earned through apprenticeship;
- a previous contract terminated for reasons beyond your control;
- a plan to start or take over a business that requires the target qualification;
- recognized status as a worker with a disability (no age limit).
Which companies can hire an apprentice?
- all private-sector companies and non-profit organizations;
- the non-industrial, non-commercial public sector, including the civil service;
- temporary employment agencies.
What type of contract, and for how long?
The contract can be fixed-term (limited to the training) or open-ended (it begins with an apprenticeship period, then the employment continues). Its length most often matches the training cycle being prepared.
What support is available to the employer?
The employer can receive a hiring grant for taking on an apprentice, social-security contribution exemptions and, when hiring a worker with a disability, specific support. The amounts are set by the regulations in force and paid by the French services and payment agency (ASP).
